Representative Virgile Osborne spent seventh period sharing wisdom,
inspiration and encouragement with our leadership 2 students. The students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and learn about our local government. Thank you, Representative Osborne.
We had a unique visitor at Sutherlin Middle School today. It was Houston, the specially trained labrador retriever. Houston patiently listened to stories read by our students and had lots of positive attention! Everyone was thrilled with the visit!

We had some impressive artwork at the county fair this summer, in case you missed it. Here are a few photos of our talented students' work. Mr. Wilson knows how to teach perspective drawing—amazing.

SMS would like to clear up any misinformation surrounding Middle School Football. Our league allows 6th-grade students to participate in any individual sports, such as wrestling, cross country, and track. With team sports like football, volleyball, and basketball, 6th-grade students can participate if there are not enough 7th-grade athletes to create a complete team roster. This has been the case for a long time, and in the last few years, some 6th-grade students have played football to fill out the 7th-grade roster while others played for the Wolfpack Club. Interest in participation varies widely in middle school, and this year, when coaches held their meeting to see how many students were interested, they had a large number of 8th, 7th, and 6th-grade football players attend.
According to the standard operating procedures for our league, we are not allowed to play 6th graders if we have an entire 7th-grade roster. We have seen many social media posts indicating that 6th grade can’t play because of a lack of equipment, and while it is true that it would be difficult to equip a large number of players, that is not the reason for not having 6th graders on the team, it is simply a matter of league procedures. Further complicating this is that “Wolfpack” football is no longer an option for 6th-grade students, and while it doesn’t change the rules we follow, we were unaware of this factor. We have also had numerous requests to start a 6th-grade team. While on the surface, this sounds great, most middle schools around the state do not have 6th-grade teams, and there are none in our league or anywhere close. Our athletic director and coaches have proposed an option for 6th-grade athletes who want to stay involved but not be on the team to practice twice a week. We know this is not ideal, but it is at least an option. We hope this clears up any questions in this matter. Thank you.
